New documentary captures unique TX tower dismantle in Willoughby

Twelve months ago, Mirvac completed its dismantling and removal of the iconic, decommissioned TX transmission tower at Willoughby in Sydney, Australia. A truly unique undertaking in terms of scale, location and engineering complexity, this epic project was executed under the highest of safety conditions with support from international heavy lifting experts Marr Contracting (The Men From Marr’s), critical infrastructure specialists Kordia and engineering experts Robert Bird Group. The 5-month long spectacle also garnered widespread interest and enthusiasm from the local community, some of whom were on hand – along with members of the construction and management crew who originally assembled the tower way back in 1965 – for an on-site celebration.

On reflecting on the dismantling, Toby Long, Mirvac’s General Manager Residential Development NSW, said, “This really was a remarkable feat of engineering, ingenuity and collaboration. Another extraordinary achievement to add to the history books in Mirvac’s 50th year, this documentary brings to life the challenges the team overcame in bringing the tower down safely and efficiently.”

Several pieces from the tower were saved and have been repurposed, finding new life as innovative playground equipment within NINE by Mirvac, its new, vibrant residential community that will soon call the site home.
