In today’s ever-evolving world of architecture and construction, architectural glass stands out as a material that continues to seamlessly blend beauty and functionality, but it must also satisfy the most current National Construction Code (NCC) energy efficiency requirements. NCC 2022 has now adopted a minimum standard of 7-Stars under the Nationwide House Energy Rating Scheme (NatHERS) and applies to single dwelling or terrace-style housing (Class 1 buildings) and domestic apartment buildings (Class 2 buildings). The transition to 7-star homes has been effective from 1st May 2024 in the NCC, with implementation dates determined by the various state and territory jurisdictions, which will mean once adopted all new-built homes will need to adhere to the new energy efficiency rating. The NatHERS scheme is a process by which a home is given a star rating based on the calculated estimated energy usage, which is influenced by the home’s design, the building materials used, such as the glazing, and the climate in which the home will be built.

As the construction industry continues to shift towards greater sustainability, the NCC will continue to play a pivotal role in setting benchmarks for Energy Efficiency in buildings.
