The Future of Fire Safety: Using AI to Detect and Forecast Fire Hazards

As fire safety technology continues to evolve, new solutions are redefining security across both domestic and industrial settings. In fact, the global fire protection system market is forecast to expand by USD $14.58 billion between 2024 and 2028, with artificial intelligence (AI) shaping these advancements1.
Throughout my time as CEO of Brooks Australia, a leader in fire safety systems for 50 years, I have had the privilege of watching this industry evolve – and with the rise of artificial intelligence, the future has never looked more promising.
Looking ahead, in the next 20 years, fire safety technology is likely to be defined by increasingly sophisticated AI and automated systems in the building and construction industry. AI applications in fire detection, risk assessment, and predictive analysis are already prioritising greater personalisation and automation, making fire safety more intuitive and seamlessly embedded in our lives.
With the potential for AI helping to detect and forecast potential hazards before they arise, this integration is being explored in three primary areas to elevate the monitoring and management of fire safety in both residential and commercial buildings2.
- AI-based smart fire safety design: Using AI models trained on large fire databases, these systems detect and forecast fire behaviour and optimise safety parameters, such as fire size and ventilation, to meet compliance standards.
- Building fire digital twin: Creating a virtual representation of a building’s fire safety system, this can provide real-time fire detection, simulate fire behaviour, and assist emergency responders by predicting fire development and progression.
- Super real-time fire forecast: Using AI-driven forecasting to predict the evolution of fire incidents and critical events, such as flashovers or structural collapses, with 5 – 10 minutes lead times, this system can reduce response times and improve safety.
Early fire risk detection is crucial in high-density environments, where thousands may occupy a single building. AI technologies are set to revolutionise fire safety by providing faster, more precise risk predictions, enhancing real-time incident monitoring, and supporting innovative firefighting strategies. As AI advances, its role in optimising fire safety design and response will become indispensable.
