Sustainable Innovation The Heart of Sirius - Orion Mechanical
The Sirius Development revitalises an iconic Sydney landmark, transforming a former social housing complex into a sophisticated residential precinct.

Originally designed in the 1970s and built in the 1980s, this redevelopment now features 76 luxury apartments, four Soho home-office units, rooftop pools, and vibrant dining spaces, alongside the revitalised Philip Room heritage area.

Orion Mechanical Services played a key role, providing advanced HVAC solutions tailored for comfort, efficiency, and sustainability. “Our goal was to deliver a mechanical installation that enhanced both comfort and performance,” said Managing Director Justin Phillips. “We carefully balanced modern technology with respect for the building’s heritage.”

In close collaboration with Richard Crookes Constructions and BVN Architects, Orion designed a bespoke heating and cooling system using two high efficiency air-cooled heat recovery multi-function chillers. These provide simultaneous chilled and heating hot water, circulated through the project via insulated vertical pipe risers. “This centralised system significantly improves energy efficiency and plant longevity while ensuring consistent climate control across all apartments,” Justin adds.

Specialised ventilation systems were installed in critical areas including basements, loading docks, gyms, and lift shafts. Orion prefabricated offsite discreet fan coil units for all apartments, equipped with advanced six-way valves and motorised pressure independent control valves for precise climate control. A comprehensive BMS system controls & monitors all mechanical plant while Residents control their individual air conditioning and lighting through an intuitive KNX home automation App interface via their own smart phone.

Particular attention was given to luxurious spaces such as penthouses and Kelly Hoppen-designed apartments. Orion utilised bespoke flangeless linear bar grilles, achieving air-conditioning comfort that’s felt but neither seen nor heard. According to Justin Phillips, “The emphasis was on aesthetic subtlety, creating seamless integration with interior design.”

Through precise 3D BIM coordination and attention to detail, Orion Mechanical has successfully contributed to the Sirius Building’s transformation into a prestigious Sydney address. As Justin proudly notes, “This project reflects Orion’s commitment to innovative, sustainable solutions that respect the past while embracing the future.”
