Innovative shade Solution for Functional Courtyard Spaces - Sydney Shade Sails at St Charbels' Aged Care Facility

Innovative Shade Solutions for functional Courtyard Spaces

When Sydney Shade Sails was engaged by St Charbel’s Aged Care Facility, the brief was clear: provide a permanent, functional,
and visually pleasing shade solution for a large, sun-exposed inner courtyard, without disrupting resident balconies or the central
garden beds.

“The purpose was to create more shaded seating areas for residents without impacting the courtyard’s natural features,” said Serena Collins, Owner and Designer at Sydney Shade Sails. “The original small shades weren’t doing enough. We had to design something that was effective and beautiful.”

Covering an area of 22 by 14 metres, the installation faced major access challenges. “No elevated platforms could reach the courtyard,” Collins explained. “One of our installers had to lie on his stomach, drill into the concrete slab just under the lip, and chemically anchor the bolts in.”

Working closely with Father Charbel and the facility manager, the Sydney Shade Sails team designed an asymmetrical layout using MPanel software and satellite imagery. Shadow diagrams ensured optimal coverage without obstructing views or head height on balconies. The shades were made from Monotech 370 Series shade cloth—Australia’s only locally manufactured option with a 15-year warranty.

“It’s monofilament, which means it’s stronger and has less stretch, but more water permeability,” said Collins. “That was essential for this design—we couldn’t pitch the sails high enough for standard drainage, so the fabric had to do the work.”

The result was so successful that the facility commissioned a second project just a month later—a 22-metre retractable shade sail for seasonal use, suspended on a cable system and completed in time for a major community event.

“This project reflects everything we stand for—durability, functionality, and design that enhances community spaces,” Collins said. “We’re proud to help create safer, more enjoyable environments for aged care residents.”
