The Magazine | Australian National Construction Review | Creating Independent Structures in Confined Spaces
Sydney Shade Sails recently completed a complex and innovative 30m cantilevered covered walkway at Marist Catholic College, Penshurst Campus, designed to provide a waterproof shelter for students.
The college required a cantilevered shade structure to cover an area designated for student lockers. One of the key challenges was ensuring that the structure did not touch the building while being securely installed.
“The client wanted a completely independent structure, which meant installing it into a retaining wall,” explained Leonard Collins, Operations Executive of Sydney Shade Sails. “One end stands at 2m, while the other reaches 4m, growing in height as it extends over the space.”
To meet the project’s demands, Sydney Shade Sails installed a PVC waterproof canopy tensioned over a powder-coated, galvanized steel frame. This combination ensures durability, weather resistance, and a sleek modern aesthetic suitable for a school environment.
However, the installation presented unique challenges. “The tricky part was the layout,” said Leonard. “We had to carefully set everything out using a laser level and stagger the heights up the retaining wall. Working at height in a confined space added complexity, making it a high-risk construction build.”
With over 30 years of experience, Leonard brought expert planning and execution to ensure the project was delivered efficiently. “The project was not a simple thing to build,” Leonard said. “Without the correct planning and know-how, the job could have blown out in terms of resources and budget.”
Thanks to Sydney Shade Sails’ expertise, the Marist Catholic College covered walkway was successfully completed during the school holidays, ensuring minimal disruption and a high-quality outcome.
